Bedroom Space Savers
Closet Resources

With the experience I have had with space planning and helping others create more space I thought it was a good idea to give you some bedroom design ideas and tips.  I normally work with home office and murphy beds (wall beds) to help those looking for extra bedroom ideas for guest rooms or master bedroom design, however, I feel the main concept in bedroom design is about the same even if you have a regular bed in the space.

More and more people are looking for bedroom ideas for a guest room so they can use that room the rest of the year when there are no guests in it.  Some want extravagant bedroom design ideas with a large home office and others just want simple bedroom designs so they can use it as an exercise room or play room for the kids.   Other bedroom design ideas have been extra storage with wall units and wardrobe units all the way to closet designing.  The most important thing is creating more functional space, whether it's in a master bedroom design, childs bedroom design or the guest bedroom.  Adding a custom closet to any bedroom design can create a lot more functional space than you can imagine.

Maybe you need space for a home office.  As one of my free bonuses you  get when you purchase the "Ultimate Closet Design Resources" e-book, you will find information and tips on planning a home office whether it's in your master bedroom design or even incorporated with a closet design.  So sit back and read on to learn some great tips on how to design your own bedroom for the most functional space.  This bedroom design idea guilde will walk you step by step through the designing of your own bedroom.

Let’s start space planning with a Master Bedroom design. Most of this will apply to all bedrooms, but may be on a smaller scale.

The Master Suite…Not all are big…Some are 10'x11', some may be 12'x12', some are long and narrow, not to mention angle walls, windows and doors...Where should the bed go?

Master Bedroom Design

Placing the bed will depend on what type of obstacles you have in your room. Where the window is, does the door open into the room or out, or is it a pocket door, what wall is the closet on and what type of doors does it have.  What about electrical outlets, phone jacks and of course other furniture you have. The largest wall in the room is usually the best wall to use for the bed. You will need to consider how much room you will need to be able to get into both sides of the bed, so don’t push a bed that is for 2 people up against a wall. Also, make sure there is enough space at the end of the bed and enough room to open your closet or entrance doors. The main type of doors to be concerned with are bi-fold doors and doors that open into the room.

How many other pieces of furniture will you have in the bedroom? You will probably have bedside tables or table, probably a dresser. You may also have something for a TV and maybe a desk. These things can cause clutter if you get too much furniture in your room or too large furniture. If you are making room for other pieces of furniture, make sure to consider where the outlets are that you will need, if electric will be needed, the same goes for cable, the traffic area you will have and having room to open any drawers or doors. The main thing in space planning is to stay uncluttered, so if you don’t need it, toss it or find a new place for it.  Built in furniture can often give you the extra room you need.

If you are considering new furniture, make sure to measure your room first so you don’t buy things that are too large to fit comfortably. I found this one out the hard way before I was doing space planning.

A few bedroom design ideas for space saving if you have limited space:

  • If you have your office in the same room, a 2 drawer file cabinet can double as a file cabinet as well as a bed side stand to put a lamp or whatever you need next to the bed.  If you build in a home office or small desk you can start next to the bed and use the desk as a table.
  • A printer stand can house electronics and reading material.  Or store your printer in a base cabinet in the desk.
  • The write headboard can double as storage. Make your own and turn it into a bookcase above the bed.
  • Have your closet custom designed. You may be able to put drawers in it and do away with a dresser.  You will also gain extra storage for other things.
  • Instead of a large side table, use a smaller side table to use less space

Follow these tips to a more spacious and organized life.

Making a child’s room something he or she can take care of themselves will save you a lot of time and aggravation. The children’s rooms are usually much smaller of course, so if the room is for one child,   keep only one twin bed in it or bunk beds that stack. A trundle bed is another option. Another great option is a Murphy Bed.  Whatever you use, make sure it is comfortable.

Make the space manageable for the child,, if the child is old enough, he/she should be  able to put things back where they belong when they are finished with it. Make sure they are in easy to reach locations.

Oh course, age is a consideration here. Don’t put things up so high that they can’t reach them. Hang hooks on the wall at a height they can reach.  Small shelving for books or shelves in the closet.

Design a bedroom to be kid friendly.

Again, don’t overload on the furniture. A child needs space to spread out and play. Another thing I have seen is too many large toys, a cute little picnic table, a desk, an easy bake oven. Before you know it, the room is full of these large toys and there is no place to play. If they don’t use it, store it or give it away even leave it outside for them to play with.

Consider getting toy boxes that you can sort toys into separate sections or baskets, a bulletin board for hanging their art work. Don’t forget to cover those outlets that you aren’t using to prevent any tragedies.

Have their closet designed. You can have shelves, drawers, baskets as well as organize their hanging clothes. You can store games, toys and clothes and books. At the same time your child will be learning how and where to put his toys away all at the same time. Save yourself a lot of time Mom.  My ebook "Ultimate Closet Design Resources" will give you some great closet ideas.

Creating a room plan can help you decide where to place your bedroom furniture. Many people will use a guest bedroom as an office, exercise room or play room as well. Again, using the same tips from the master bedroom, determine the best way to place your furniture.

If you have a desk in this room, make sure it is near the necessary outlets. If you are planning on getting a desk, do your research. If you are working in a small area with limited space, I recommend a build in desk. You will get the type of cabinets you need and the size of desk you want and you can also have upper cabinets for more storage. Although this could be a little more expensive, depending on what you are doing, it will be worth the space in the long run.

When you have a guest room, it may not get used more than a couple times a year. It seems to be such a waste to have the room filled up with a bed when you could use it for other things like a craft room or exercise room, even a toy room for the kids.

I know, your first thought was a hide-a-bed or day bed. This will help, but your guests may never come back after they sleep on them because they are so uncomfortable. Maybe that’s a good thing. but usually not. My suggestion would be to look into a wall bed, better known as Murphy Beds. These are beds that stand up vertically and are hidden in a cabinet. So they only take up about 20” of floor space when you are not using them.  The best thing about them is that they have a regular mattress on them and they can come in sizes from a twin to a king. They are comfortable to sleep on and you can even leave the bedding in some when you fold them up. Do your research before you buy. Remember, less expensive is not always the best buy. All in all in your room design, make sure you have balance in your room, most people like symmetry, don’t forget about your traffic areas, and most important it needs to be functional and not overloaded.
